In truth, I cannot believe 10 years have passed already since that fateful day in which so many people lost their lives… where has the time gone?

Yet, for many people, the last 10 years have been the longest and most painful ever without their loved ones by their sides; their husbands, wives, sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, friends and relatives… all perished, lost forever, injured or scarred for life by the atrocities they faced.

Much has happened in the world since then and is it really a better place as a result? I’m not going to jump on to my soapbox, don’t worry!

Whilst life goes on, let us all spare a thought today for those who not only lost their precious lives, were injured or scarred for life but for all those wonderful people who risked their own lives to help so many casualties at the scene and also those who were involved in the months following.  Thank you.

A Day We Will Never Forget…

I will never forget hearing about the ‘Twin Towers’, it is one of those moments in history  you will never forget, a moment when you will never forget where you were when you heard.  For me, I was with a friend literally signing on the dotted line in the car dealership when a Salesman came in to the office and told us a plane had hit the World Trade Centre.

Rightly or wrongly, being in my very early twenties at the time, I didn’t really watch the news regularly, I had no interest in finance and was employed, so I wasn’t completely au fait with what the Twin Towers were (*blushes*), nor was I familiar with the sheer numbers of people it housed.  We all assumed it was a light aircraft having veered out of control and the Twin Towers just happened to be in the way.  It never occurred to us that it would be anything sinister.

Sitting in that office, it was hard to compute the scale of destruction that a plane hitting the World Trade Centre was causing thousands of miles away in the USA.  When we got home, we turned on the news.  Complete horror! The world’s worst fears were realised, it was indeed a terror attack using a commercial plane but by this time, it was not just one, it was two towers that had been hit.  I remember we sat there in shock, numb, wondering what the world had come to.

2011 GCSE Exam Results

According to the exam boards, 2011 has been another record year for GCSE exam results, with over 23% of pupils having attained grade A or A* this year and an impressive 69.8% have been awarded grade C or above.  Sorry boys, but the results are also saying the girls pipped you to the post at getting better grades overall.

What do I do once I have my A Level Results?

Well, it’s that time of year again when thousands of you, A Level students across the UK, will wake up with that sick feeling in the pit of your stomachs or a million butterflies teetering around as you try to eat breakfast but if you are anything like me, end up pushing it aside due to sheer anticipation of those oh so important RESULTS!

Yes, it’s the 18th of August 2011 already and that means it’s A Level Results day in the UK.  Before long many of you will be arriving at your place of education to open the envelope, which could determine your entire future career.

Sadly, getting the right grades is even more of a pressure this year with university fees set to top up to £9k per year at some universities… an amount, which is just too far out of reach for many of you, who consider this year to be your chance.  Despite the doom and gloom swirling around in the media, we must remember that this year is 2011 and this year fees remain ‘less expensive’ let’s say, because tuition fees are still mighty high.

So, how did you get on?

I Got the Grades to meet my Firm Offer at my First Choice University

Congratulations! if you have got the grades, that is fantastic news!  But, please spare a thought for all those fellow students who have not been so lucky and may have just missed out on their dream placement.

Whilst your first instinct maybe to call your first choice university, remember today is going to be a manic (with a capital M) day for them and it is advisable to leave the lines open for those students who didn’t make the grade and are now having to embark on the ‘Clearing Process’.

If you have met the grades outlined in your ‘Firm Offer’ then please try to resist calling and keep checking the UCAS Track, but bear in mind it may take some time to update.  Difficult to resist calling the university, I know!

Sit tight, within a few days you will receive your AS12 letter from your university, confirming your placement and course details.  Then the hard work begins!

My Grades are Higher than Expected, What About Adjustment?

If your grades have turned out to be simply stunning, better than you ever expected, you might now be thinking you could have opted for another university with more stringent grading criteria.

Adjustment is optional and to find out if your grades qualify you, I would recommend you visit the UCAS website to double-check.

You will have just a few days to register you adjustment interest on Track so ensure you register in good time if this is the option you want to take.  You will have to physically visit each universities website for Adjustment places as I understand these are not published by UCAS and the UCAS Track system.

I Didn’t Get the Grades to meet my Firm Offer

Don’t panic! I know it is easier said than done but if you have missed your firm offer, check the Track system to see if it is a conditional or unconditional offer.  If the offer is unconditional, then you have a place, all you have to do is wait for the AS12 letter.

If it is still showing conditional, then it is advisable to call the university, they’ve probably sent you a letter already with the phone number on, to ask them if you are accepted and don’t forget to sell yourself to them!  Remind them just how fantastic your module results were, how you have narrowly missed the grade by X marks and, of course, how much of a committed student you are.

If they have not made a decision, don’t forget to ask them when you can expect to hear from them.  They shouldn’t keep you hanging around for too long but if you don’t hear within a few days, follow it up or contact UCAS directly.

If your UCAS Track is showing up as unsuccessful, I am sorry to say you have not made it on this occasion but don’t despair, there are still options open to you but perhaps not your ideal option.  Please bear in mind that pleading and begging is unlikely to secure that place so you would be better spending your time seeking an alternative placement.

What About University Places Available Via The ‘Clearing’ Process?

Clearing works two-fold.  It helps universities to fill vacant course spaces and offers students a vital chance to find a course placement if results mean you’ve missed out on your first choice university.

Clearing actually runs in to October but you MUST have your application registered before 20/9/11.  However, the sooner you register, the better as the majority of places are snapped up and allocated within the first week or so after A Level results are published.

Am I eligible for The Clearing Process?

You will be eligible for UCAS’ clearing process if your UCAS application is current and you have not withdrawn for any reason.  In order to be eligible for clearing, you must meet one or more of the following criteria:

• Have NO current university placement OFFERS on the table
• Your university has NOT confirmed your place due to unexpected grades, etc
• You have DECLINED or not responded to an offer you have been made
• Your UCAS application didn’t go through until after 30/6/11

If you are in the UCAS Clearing System you will be allocated a ‘Clearing Number’ on the UCAS Track System.  Keep this number SAFE!! You will need this number whenever you speak to a university and so they can view your application.

The beauty of clearing is that you can apply for any course which takes your fancy, even if it is nothing like the type of course you originally applied for.  If you are looking for a specific course, the options might be limited and you might have to make a compromise but if you do take an alternative course, ensure you have made the right decision for YOU and it’s not just a knee-jerk reaction to ensure you have uni place.

I think it goes without saying that there are some universities who don’t participate in the Clearing System: Oxford, Cambridge and UCL for example, due to the huge demand for their prestigious places.

Clearing Vacancies will be published from today (18/8/11) and all week in the Telegraph newspaper but you will also find clearing vacancies in places, such as:

• Telegraph newspaper
• Local Universities may advertise their spare places in your local newspaper

Over the past few days there have been far too many untrue rumours flying around on Twitter and other social networking sites about where disorders such as violence and looting are occurring.  The majority of these are just rumours, which are just fuelling problems and causing unnecessary worry to residents.

I’m simply shocked, saddened and appalled by the scenes of rioting blazoned across our television screens, depicting the chaos in London and many other UK towns. What has happened to the youth of today to think this sort of behaviour is acceptable? It’s not!

Amongst all the crazy bedlam, true British spirit shines through and already positivity is emerging out of all the negativity. I love Twitter, the power of Twitter and already I’m pleased to be following @riotclean and @artistsmakers who are coordinating the Twitter-based clean up. I would like to see the hashtag #riotcleanup trending all day, watching the positive word and action spread across the UK.

Let’s show the world that social media can be pro-active and positive!

I think it goes without saying that with only 400 arrests made, there are still many thousands of criminals still roaming free with their arms full of electrical goods, alcohol and what ever else they could lay their thieving hands on. I would like to hope that the parents of these people will ask some serious questions when ‘little Joe Blogs’ finally rolls in with their spoils and even have the gumption to take action.

Apparently, there are many allegations that the riots had been organised via BBM. Whilst I’m not a Blackberry user so I don’t really know how it works, I understand its an open messaging system. Surely, it would be wise and supportive of BlackBerry to temporarily suspend this system?

As some of you may know from Twitter, I lost my dear Office Assistant a few weeks ago and I didn’t want the moment to pass without mentioning how much he’d be sorely missed, particularly as he has been coming in to the office with me in recent months and had become part of the furniture, so to speak.

However, despite having composed a great big lengthy blog about his rare illness (feline / cat osteosarcoma of the jaw bone) many people I spoke to about it said they wouldn’t be able to read it, it would be too sad and nobody wants to feel sad on a Friday!

So, I thought I would take this opportunity to turn something sad and negative in to something positive and ask you if you could save a life? I can proudly say yes I could, this is something I passionately believe in.  After all, what good are organs to us after we are dead, it seems sacrilege to let them wither and turn in to maggot food.

A Real Life Story of the Importance of Organ Donation

Earlier this year, I was saddened to read on Facebook that an old friend of mine James was in much need of a Kidney transplant. 

Most of us will never even begin to know what it feels like to have our lives hang in the balance, or to be dependant on a donor that might not arrive in time but fortunately, James was able to receive a live organ donation from his lovely wife at Addenbrooks Hospital, Cambridge.  James is definately one of the lucky ones, there are so many more people out there who don’t and can languish on a Transplant Co-ordinator’s list until it’s too late. 

Unlike most, this story (thank heavens) has had a happy ending because for so many families, tragedy strikes and THREE people die EVERY DAY because there are just not enough organs available.

Years back, we carried donor cards, they were everywhere.  I still have mine in my purse, albeit somewhat dog-eared and out of date with my maiden name still on it.  I often look for a replacement when I visit my surgery but to date, I have not stumbled across one and I for one, think organ donation should be mandatory. (That’s bound to spark debate). Despite having the battered old card, I have still ensured that I am signed up online, as have the rest of my family.

Today, technology has taken over and registration can be done quickly and simply online and I would urge you and your family to help save the lives of so many people.

I have literally just logged on to the site to update my details, I have been on the register for years and to be honest, I couldn’t recall if I’d updated my address when I last moved.  So, I logged on and updated – just in case.  However, organ donation is a subject we have discussed openly in my family and we all know that should the worst happen, we all want the opportunity to give the gift of life.

Do you Use Google+?

I recently accepted an invite to join Google+ and I’m just beginning to get my head round it, working out what it does and doesn’t do, gradually updating my profile and adding connections. 

I  regularly use Facebook for business and personal purposes so I was naturally intrigued to find out more about Google’s Social Networking platform. 

Would Google+ be any better? Mmm… I think it could be, in time.  With anything, it’s often a case of getting used to it.

To date, I have been using Google+ on the PC but to be honest, the vast majority of my social media stuff is done from my iPhone or iPad.  Despite a quick nosey round the App Store, I was not able to find the App but I had an inkling one was recently released.  Then, I spotted a Tweet in my Twitter stream.

My thanks go to Dee from (Virtual Assistant Support Group) VASG, who pointed me in the right direction, I have now downloaded the Google+ iPhone App and of course, had a little play with it.  I think it is definitely one for my growing A-Z of iPhone Apps list.

Where Do you Find the iPhone App?

Good question! You’d think that by typing in Google+ in the App Store search box that it would come up immediately.  Wrong!

For some reason, it is under the title of ‘Huddle’ and you have to scroll down the page to find the icon above.  (Don’t download the wrong one like I did initially – I was tired!)

The image on the left is how it (currently) appears in the iTunes App Store – just so you know you have the right one.  

Even better, the App is FREE!

What does the Google+ App Do?

Well, as I said earlier, I’m still working this out but to date, I have tried all these:

• Circles: A great system, which allows you to assign each contact to a specific circle.  From what I have discovered so far, this means that when you post content, only people in the selected circles can see the content.  If this truly works then it is great for keeping business and personal posts separate.
• Stream: Much like Facebook, there is a main stream where you catch up on everyone elses posts, share, make comments, +1 (same as FB Like), etc.
• Huddle: An online meeting place, which allows you to chat with your friends.
• Notifications: Just like Facebook, Google+ notifies you when you log in of anything new you need to be aware of.
• Photos: In the App there is a Photos tab where you can see photos from people in your circles, photos of you and your albums.  You can even take pictures from your iPhone and upload them directly in to the photos from your phone album.
• Profile: You can access your Profile directly from the App itself.
